Jonecia Keels and Jazmine Miller are co-captains of the college’s Spelbots robotics team, and will share the scholarship with their winning development for the 2010 AT&T Big Mobile Campus Challenge. The students said they created the application to educate the large number of Americans still unfamiliar with the term “HBCU” and the legacy of Black schools. “There are many people…who hold stereotypes pertaining to these colleges and universities, such as the false belief of HBCUs not being academically challenging institutions – which is far from the truth,” said Keels, a Spelman senior majoring in computer science and computer engineering, in an interview with blackamericaweb.com. “We created this app to educate the masses [and] inspire the next generation to attend HBCUs…”
The app includes virtual tours, academic information, admissions details, alumni help and more.
