by Julie Bloom, New York Times

The Jacksons were honored at the BMI Urban awards on Thursday at the Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles, The Associated Press reported. Originally known as the Jackson Five, the group had numerous hits for Motown before leaving the label in 1976 and changing its name to the Jacksons. Four of the six brothers who were in the group over the years — Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Randy Jackson — attended the ceremony; Michael and Jermaine were absent. Their sister Janet Jackson presented them with the BMI Icon award for lifetime achievement after a tribute performance. Others taking home awards included T-Pain for songwriter of the year; Ne-Yo, Espen Lind and Amund Bjorklund for song of the year for “Irreplaceable”; and Jonathan Rotem, Kanye West and T-Pain for producers of the year.
