YONKERS – The next Tiger Woods just might be on display next week when a nonprofit group hosts a free golf camp for dozens of local children.

African American Men of Westchester, a group of professional black men active in social causes, is hosting its annual Free Youth Golf Camp at Dunwoodie Golf Course in Yonkers.

“The purpose is to give the youth in Westchester, especially minority youth, a chance to play a sport they wouldn’t normally get an opportunity to play because it’s such an expensive sport,” said James Robinson, assistant to the commissioner of Greenburgh’s Parks and Recreation Department and co-chairman of the golf camp. “Once they get out on the course and start hitting that ball, it’s a lifelong sport. They really like it.”

On Wednesdays between July 16 and Aug. 20, volunteer instructors will teach the basics. Free snacks and drinks will be provided by co-sponsor Westchester Links, Robinson said.

About 80 children ages 8 to 18 are expected to enroll, Robinson said. Campers who show up for all six weeks will receive a free set of starter golf clubs, Robinson said, to encourage them to continue playing.
