L.A. Democrat becomes first black woman to lead Assembly

basskaren.jpgAssemblywoman Karen Bass received a unanimous vote in the lower house of the Legislature today to become the next speaker of the Assembly, making her the first African American woman to hold the position – one of the most powerful in state government.

“This is an amazing, amazing moment,” Bass, a 54-year-old Democrat from Los Angeles, said shortly after the vote. “Members, thank you so much for your vote of faith and confidence in me as your next speaker.”
