Steve Harvey and Disney team up for Disney’s Dreamers Academy

with 5 comments

Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will host to approximately 100 teenagers (ages 9-12).  They are the winners of the first ever Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey.  The event will take place January 17-20, 2008 (over the MLK, Jr. long weekend).

The participants are winners of a creative campaign to find and empower young people with a special focus on African American teens.  The application process consisted of an essay in which the young people were asked to write about their dreams and goals in life.   The main prize would be a trip to Disney with their parents and guardians.  Disney looked for a very special spokesperson to appeal to a younger audience and stir up interest in the event.  Steve Harvey was their man.

  2. I am submitting this candidate to the “Disney’s Dreamers Academy,” to save her life. The letter quoted below is written by Lakell and expresses her feelings of the world she lives in at such an early age, in Baltimore (inner city) Maryland. I am one of Lakell’s teachers (as she mentions in her words below), and I believe we all see he potential; however, due to her prior experiences and her current circumstances she would be unable to afford an opportunity to explore her true talents/gifts. For this reason I believe she would be an excellent candidate to attend the “Disney Dreamers Academy!” Please read her letter below stated in her own words:

“Hi, my name is Lakell Curbeam, I am 15 years old. I live in Baltimore, Md. and attend Heritage High School. One of my teachers, Ms. Williams suggests that I’d write a letter to tell my story since I have potential as a young lady. I’ve been exposed to the streets at an early age since that’s all I knew. Violence, crime, murders, and drugs my mom tries her best but I guess she can’t do all by herself. All my teachers say I’m a humanity girl. Since I grew up in the hood I picked up a few hood habits, got caught up into some wrong things. Two months ago I lost my best friend in a tragic murder and he was only seventeen. I am still very hurt by this tragic loss. It took a major part out of my life and sometimes I find myself crying. My teacher Ms. Williams is very hard on us but they say what don’t kill you only make you stronger so I take her advice and dreams to be successful. I know I want to play a major part in my community and to our society but I have more than one gift. I can do hair, write and I love to cook soul food. I have a very good sense in debate also I like to do all but it might take a few years. Before I graduate I have to make a decision. I think that I’d be an extraordinary candidate for your contest because I am very focused and ready to achieve. I also think I am qualified because I think I am qualified because I think this program would be a marvelous motivation for me and what a girl like me needs. I’ve been thru many challenging events in my life. I could have been dead but I’m blessed. I thank god for waking me up every morning to see another day. Growing up facing hard times sometimes has me down but when I realize how far I come pushes me more to achieve my goals to succeed. I’d really need it. Most fifteen olds my age are spoiled and have people around giving them motivation they need. But in the city of Baltimore allot of kids think there’s only one way to be successful. It hurts to see young people die at an early age. When I become successful I’d like to make programs like Career Builders for young people and such sorts to keep them off the streets, because as I am growing up now, there is completely nothing.”

  3. Dear Steve Harvey,

My name is Tracie Davenport and I’m writing on behalf of my ten year old granddaughter Ariel Patterson. Firstly, let me say I think what you and your crew are doing is wonderful, and I’m sure you will certainly be blessed for it. My Granddaughter Ariel has always wanted dreamed of going to Florida so she can go to the “Big Disneyland”. Unfortunately I haven’t had the funds or resources to make that dream come true. I feel that my granddaughter would be the best candidate for this trip because she deserves it. She’s been through so much to be so young, yet she continuously excels in school. Her father (my son) was killed in August of 2002, during that time I retained custody, due to her mother’s excessive drug use. I could not let my grandchild fall into the system, or live under the conditions that her mother was in. Though her life has been filled with turmoil, she continues to stay in good spirits, she sings in the church choir and is always looking out for others with what little she has. Being a single mom was rough, but being a single grandmother is even tougher. I would love to show her how proud I am of her with a nice trip but I simply can’t afford it. Steve if you pick my grandbaby it would mean the world to me and her. Thanks for the opportunity and I pray that God will continue to bless you and your family.

P.S Keep doing what you do!
