“Recovered Views: African American Portraits, 1912-1925”

The photo collection depicts Midwest African-American life in the early 1900s.

The photographs are attributed to John Johnson, son of a slave, said John E. Carter, the collection’s curator for the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln, although it’s possible another photographer of the time, Earl McWilliams, could have taken them.
