Jack Perry set to open all-boy charter school

with 2 comments

Raised in Brooklyn Heights with three sisters and his single mother, Jack Perry used education as his path to upward mobility. Neither his mother or his father (who died of HIV when he was 14) graduated from high school.

He will open Prestige, an all-boys college prep charter, in Delaware. Prestige Academy will open in August with a 108-seat fifth-grade class. It will add a grade a year, eventually serving about 400 fifth- to eighth-graders.

Perry expects many students to arrive a year or more behind. A longer school day — 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. — and year — 194 days — with optional twice-monthly Saturday sessions and summer school will help catch them up. Hiring high-quality teachers is equally important. “We don’t want teachers to make excuses for our kids,” Perry said. “We believe if we set the bar high, the kids are going to reach that bar.”
