Demings, Val (b. 1957) became the first female police chief for the Orlando Police Department in 2007. She served as a patrol officer, a juvenile-crime detective, a community-relations officer, public-information officer and hostage negotiator. She later served as a supervisor over patrol, investigations, internal affairs and the airport division in her 23 years of service before becoming chief. Her husand is former Orlando Police Chief (the first African-American to hold the position), Jerry Demings.
